Build Carolina Expands Engineering Apprenticeship Program

In support of South Carolina’s Unified State Plan for Education and Workforce Development

[Greenville, SC] – [Nov. 21, 2024] – Build Carolina, a nonprofit dedicated to advancing South Carolina’s tech community through workforce training and development, is excited to announce the expansion of its Registered Apprenticeship program. Build Carolina is launching additional engineering-focused technical tracks, designed to meet the growing demand for skilled talent across the state.

The expanded program will offer apprenticeships in four high-demand areas:

  1. Software engineering

  2. Data engineering

  3. Cloud engineering

  4. Cybersecurity

These additional tracks align with South Carolina’s new Unified State Plan for Education and Workforce Development and Build Carolina's mission of providing cutting-edge training and fostering career pathways, while addressing critical skill gaps in the state’s workforce, and underscore the program’s commitment to creating sustainable employment opportunities and supporting economic growth.

"We are thrilled to expand our apprenticeship offerings to better serve the needs of both employers and aspiring professionals," said Lelia King, executive director of Build Carolina. "This expansion allows us to continue building South Carolina’s tech talent pipeline and providing high-quality training programs that drive success for participants and businesses alike."

“Build Carolina’s expansion is a great example of how a statewide framework such as the Unified State Plan can guide the training and education of the future workforce”, said William Floyd, DEW Executive Director. “The Unified State Plan lists over 100 Priority Occupations, based on current demand, projected growth, viability, and retention. These jobs are in high demand and forecasted to become essential, thriving careers, with untapped potential. Information Technology occupations are among the fastest growing occupations in South Carolina and several, including Software Developers, are considered Priority Occupations. Build Carolina’s apprenticeship programs will provide additional pathways to critical high-value credentials for successful entry into technology careers.”

The apprenticeship program provides a unique combination of hands-on experience and classroom instruction, equipping participants with the skills they need to thrive in today’s competitive job market. Through collaborations with local employers, apprentices will receive tailored, on-the-job training that leads to high-paying, long-term careers in tech and other industries.

Employers who host an apprentice for the six-month program may be eligible for tax incentives or other benefits. Interested employers in all relevant industries are encouraged to reach out.
